Pat Brown, meanwhile, takes it all in and throws it back with gusto, confidently expecting currently unfavorable polls to reverse themselves by November—as they have repeatedly done before. "I want to tell you that I've been a good Governor," the 61-year-old Brown admonishes the faithful. Drawing a deep breath, he adds: "As a matter of fact, I've been a great Governor. If you let this state go to a motion-picture actor or anybody else after the things I've done, you ought to be ashamed of yourselves."
