Sport: Unraveled Sox

Nobody knows for sure, but Eddie ("The Brat") Stanky, 50, may once have smiled when his mother chucked him under the chin. One thing is certain: the splenetic manager of the Chicago White Sox was in no smiling mood last week. His go-go Sox, who finished fourth in the American League last year and rated as strong contenders this season, were wallowing around in the league cellar after losing their first ten games in a row—an achievement that earned them a line in baseball's record book, ahead of the 1962 New York Mets (nine straight losses) yet not quite up there with the 1904 Washington Senators (13 straight).

At week's end, the White Sox finally won a game, squeaking past the Minnesota Twins, 3-2. "I don't feel any different," growled Stanky. "I don't feel any happier."
