National Affairs: Hot Potato Dropped
Though the Chicago police were officially whitewashed by a special investigating committee of six unemployed American Legionnaires for shooting and clubbing ten men to death outside a Republic Steel plant one Sunday last May, the city's officials were left holding an exceedingly hot potato. Arrested during the massacre were 63 men & women, many of them badly wounded. They were originally held on charges of conspiracy. The State finally solved its problem by reducing the charges to unlawful assembly. Last week 57 defendants, some still battered, pleaded guilty. Six others, accused of being leaders, were fined $10 each, the rest, $1.
