Medicine: Bachelor Nurses

One of education's great failures—made worse by war—is the way in which colleges turn out many students crammed in one professional field and ignorant of the rest. Last week Harvard's bluestocking sister, Radcliffe College, announced an experiment aimed toward correcting that failure.

Beginning next fall, Radcliffe (along with Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital) will put twelve hand-picked nursing students through a course which will earn for them not only an R.N. but a bachelor's degree in liberal arts besides. It will take five and a half years, instead of the nursing school's usual three.

Graduates will probably end up not as regular nurses but as candidates for such jobs as nursing directors, administration heads of clinics, etc.—the pacemakers of the nursing of tomorrow, the sponsors hope.
