National Affairs: Divorced Candidates
Two serious presidential possibilities, Averell Harriman and Adlai Stevenson, have been divorced. Pollster George Gallup tried to find out how much of a handicap divorce would be to a candidate. His results: more than 81% of his sample said they would vote for a qualified candidate even if he were divorced, 14% would not.
Gallup also tried to get the voting public's opinion on putting a military man in the White House. Of those interviewed, 70% said they would vote for a military man; 25% said they would not.
