No church is eligible for property-tax exemption under California's controversial Levering law unless its board signs a special oath of loyalty to the Government. Last week the First Unitarian Church of Berkeley, Calif. announced that it would pay taxes (more than $2,200 a year) rather than sign and condone what is regarded as a violation of church-state separation.
