¶ In Melbourne, after Australian Miler John Landy had again come within a second of the world record with a 4:02.4 clocking, Finnish Champion Denis Johansson gasped: "Landy is magnificent. I have never seen anything like it. On a first-class cinder track and with good opposition he could run a 3:55 mile." Landy promptly announced that he will make a U.S. and European tour this spring and summer once he gets firm invitations.

¶ In Manhattan for the fourth annual East-West game of the National Basket ball Association, Master Dribbler Bob Cousy of the Boston Celtics (TIME, Dec. 28) sank ten of the East's 14 points in overtime, was named the game's most valuable player. The East won, 98-93.

¶In St. Louis, the highest-paid player in National League history, Cardinal Outfielder Stan Musial, signed his fourth straight contract for a salary estimated at $80,000.

¶ In Chicago, where the White Sox are talking of beating the New York Yankees for the 1954 American League pennant, the management is thoughtfully installing devices to keep the paying customers right up to date: television sets at the hot dog stands, radios in the rest rooms.

¶At San Diego, Gene Littler, national amateur golf champion, showed touring tournament pros how the game should be played. Over the par-72 course in the $15,000 San Diego Open, Amateur Littler fired rounds of 67, 66, 69, 72, beat the runnerup, Professional C. J. ("Dutch") Harrison, by 4 strokes.
