Education: The Vanishing Teacher
It was an old story, but U.S. Education Commissioner Lawrence Derthick added some frightening figures to it. Of the men and women who graduated from college in 1956 with qualifications to teach, 30% never went into the profession at all. Even worse: half of those who did start expect to quit within five years.
