A sudden downpour washed out the ceremony that was to take place on the lawn of the President's quarters at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station on Oahu. The presidential party ran for cover to the officers' club, and there in a 2½-minute ceremony, Dwight D. Eisenhower received his 46th* and quickest honorary degree, an LL.D. from President Laurence H. Snyder of the University of Hawaii. Read the citation: "His travels to the far corners of the earth as an emissary of peace have endeared the hearts, won the minds and rallied the loyalties of freedom-loving peoples to the cause of peace with justice."
* By best count. The White House has no complete list of Ike's degrees, but notes the following: Queen's University, Belfast ('45); Louvain ('45); Oxford ('45); Toronto ('46); Boston University ('46); Richmond ('46); Texas A&M ('46); Gettysburg ('46); Harvard ('46); Norwich ('46); Edinburgh ('46); Cambridge ('46); Lafayette ('46); Princeton ('47); Columbia ('47); Pennsylvania ('47); West Virginia ('47); Rutgers ('48); Williams ('48); Yale ('48); Jewish Theological Seminary ('48); State University of N.Y. ('48); Santo Domingo ('48); Caen ('48); Temple ('50); Denver ('50); William and Mary ('53); Dartmouth ('53); Catholic University ('53); Washington College ('54); Trinity ('54); Pennsylvania State ('55); Citadel ('55); Baylor ('56); American University ('57); Mount St. Mary's ('58); Johns Hopkins ('58); Georgetown ('58); University of New Delhi ('59); Notre Dame (!60); University of the Philippines ('60).
