WORLD'S LARGEST combination of bridge and tunnel (17.6 miles) will be built across Chesapeake Bay with $200 million revenue bond issue. Two tunnels, a bridge and 11.9 miles of causeway will link Cape Charles, Va. with Chesapeake Beach near Norfolk, pave way for a new coastal highway along the Virginia seacoast to provide most direct north-south route between New England and Florida.
ORIENT ROUTE OVERHAUL for jet age will provide major expansion of U.S. Pacific flag routes if CAB and President approve. Six U.S. airlines will get new or expanded routes, with biggest gains going to Pan American and Northwest, the only U.S. lines now flying west to Asia.
CHILDREN'S TREAT was ordered by Food and Drug Administration, which issued a new set of standards to enrich ice cream, the favorite U.S. dessert (18.7 Ibs. per person last year). Henceforth it must be richer, cleaner, and contain less air and water.
MAJOR TARIFF RULING by U.S. Customs Court will strip President of his power to adjust Tariff Commission recommendations, thus benefit protectionists since commission has often been more sympathetic than the White House to industry. Government may go to Supreme Court to challenge the ruling.
