Education: Too Many High Schools?
The U.S. has too many high schools; for the sake of national efficiency it should merge the small ones. So said U.S. Education Commissioner John W. Studebaker to the Progressive Education Association in Atlantic City. With a high school at every U.S. crossroads, he said, half of the nation's 23,000 have fewer than 100 students apiece.
"Something has been wrong with secondary education in this age of technical development," said Commissioner Studebaker. "Schools must reshape their curriculum and rearrange their physical facilities to meet the challenge of the technical age."
