¶ The House, by a crushing 345-to-56 majority, passed a bill to quash $5.8 billion in portal-pay suits, went further in its crackdown on labor with provisions to make future suits almost impossible.

¶ The Senate Appropriations Committee voted to let OPA (which the House had wanted to kill by week's end) have $8 million to bury itself decently by June 30, when sugar and rice controls probably would go to the Agriculture Department.

¶ A Senate Banking subcommittee recommended a 10% increase in rents above Dec. 31 levels, with enforcement left to the courts.
