FASHION: Old Hat
What the U.S. needs, said David Weisberg, president of the Millinery Merchandising Executive Association last week, is a hat that will make "last year's best hat utterly obsolete."
"I have felt," said he, "that one of the reasons why the millinery business has not kept pace is that since the war we have had nothing as radical as the Empress Eugenie silhouette,* which made every existing fashion as dead as the dodo . . .
"Something completely different ... is wanted, with an obligation to continue the creation of these new and different things that will constantly drive into the memories of the past last year's hat."
*An ostrich-plumed hat of the early '30s, usually worn at a rakish angle, which almost completely hid one eye.
