THE ADMINISTRATION: Still Infiltrated

Have all the Communists been rooted out of the Government? No, said General Walter Bedell Smith this week. As head of the Central Intelligence Agency, Smith should know.

He made his statement under oath as a witness in the $2,000,000 libel suit brought by Senator Joe McCarthy of Wisconsin against Senator William Benton of Connecticut. McCarthy's attorney asked Smith if he thought there were Communists in the State Department.

"I do," said Smith, and added: "I believe there are Communists in my own organization."

Asked if he knew who they were Smith replied:

"I do not. I wish I did. I do everything I can to detect them. I believe they are so adroit and adept they have infiltrated every security agency of the Government."
