¶The University of Maryland's football team, an unexpectedly close one, over Auburn, 13-7; in Birmingham, Ala. This showing, on top of the previous week's last-minute 13-10 win over Missouri, sent experts back to their charts to see just why they had rated Maryland the best in the nation.
¶The Detroit Tigers' Lefthander Hal Newhouser, his 200th major-league victory (against 147 defeats), over the Browns, 3-2; in Detroit.
¶Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt's undefeated, two-year-old Native Dancer, the $107,545 Belmont Futurity, in the world-record-equaling time of1 min. 14 2/5 sec. for 6½ furlongs; on the Widener Course straightaway at Belmont. Odds-on choice at 1 to 3, the dark grey colt (by Polynesian, out of Geisha) brushed his opposition aside in the stretch to win his eighth straight race.
¶Long Island's Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, the Skoal Trophy Race for International Class sloops, from Oslo's Royal Norwegian Yacht Club; on Long Island Sound. Begun in 1951, the race alternates between Norway and Long Island; last year, sailing on their home waters, the Norwegians won.
