UNITED NATIONS: Those Congo Blues

The U.N. continued to have the Congo on its mind and wished it didn't. Items:

¶After a bitter parliamentary fight, the General Assembly voted 53-24 to seat President Joseph Kasavubu as the legal representative of the Congo, overriding the diehard minority of Afro-Asians who still support his bitter rival, deposed Premier Patrice Lumumba.

¶Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold told the General Assembly that the U.N. Congo command was virtually bankrupt, largely because of the refusal of the Soviet Union to contribute, and would have to suspend operations unless someone (a euphemism for the U.S.) anteed up $22 million forthwith.
