Students: Big Brother for S.D.S.

Though their placards and protests disappeared with June's diplomas, student radicals have hardly let the summertime lull slow their efforts to keep U.S. universities up against the wall. In Chicago, young faculty members and graduate students have founded a New University Conference, postgraduate big brother of the Students for a Democratic Society.

Composed of aging S.D.S. types who can rattle off terms like "participatory democracy" and "new radicalism" without a blink, the new group aims to do for teachers what S.D.S. did for—and to—students. In other words, it means to define their political roles, uncover university complicity in "war research" and "social manipulation," meanwhile aiding those teachers whose jobs are jeopardized because of their revolutionary beliefs. In New York City, one group of young radicals set up a Summer Liberation School near Columbia University, while others have signed up for the city's eight-week Intensive Teacher Training Program. By September, they hope to be in the classrooms as certified teachers, personally carrying out the "radicalization" of high school students.
