Medicine: Cuban Doctors' Dilemma

Raimundo López, a Havana physician, was more interested in practicing medicine than politics. But once Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba, López found himself unable to separate the two. When he refused to join the Communist Party, he lost his job at Havana's Calixto Garcia Hospital. His position was further undermined when his wife's brother was killed as he sought asylum at a foreign embassy. Finally López applied for permission to leave Cuba, was allowed to emigrate in 1969, and after an eight-month stopover in Mexico, arrived in the U.S. in 1970.
