Since 1964, the Surgeon General's report on the nation's health has dramatically changed the public attitude toward smoking. As a result of its insistent proddings and calls for "remedial action," smoking ads have been banned from television and radio, and the warning on packs of cigarettes has escalated from a modest "may be hazardous to your health" in 1970, to the current "Warning: The Surgeon General Has Determined That Cigarette Smoking Is Dangerous to Your Health."
