¶ University of Washington oarsmen: a clean sweep over the University of California crews (varsity, junior varsity, freshman) in the No. 1 regatta of the Pacific Coast; for the fourth year in a row; on Lake Washington, Seattle. For the varsity crew, U. S. and Olympic champions, it was the 19th consecutive major victory in three years.
¶ New York University swordsmen: the Intercollegiate Fencing Association three-weapon team trophy. No. 1 collegiate fencing honor; for the fourth successive year; placing first in the sabre event, second in foils and second in epée; winning 73½ bouts out of 99 in the two-day, twelve-college round robin; in the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Astor, New York City. Runner-up was Yale, with 69½ victories. Navy finished third with 66, Army fourth with 65.
¶ Max Schmeling, 32-year-old German heavyweight contender: a technical knockout over obscure 24-year-old Steve Dudas of Edgewater, N. J., after flooring him seven times; in the fifth round of a scheduled 15-round boxing match, his last tune-up before meeting Joe Louis for the world championship in June; before 23,000 Nazi fight fans: at Hamburg, Germany.
