The tenth day of October, the tenth month, is China's equivalent of Independence Day. Last week Nanking buzzed with rumors that Chiang Kai-shek was about to give Chinese a double reason for celebrating the Double Tenth. Had military successes against the Communists around Kalgan created a new political situation in which compromise and truce were possible? Some of the few who might know were suddenly more hopeful than they had been for weeks.
