Manhattan's Daily Worker, which fancies itself a Communist oasis in a democratic desert, admitted it was running short of figs and water. With few ads, only 23,400 readers (67,000 Sundays) and high costs, the Worker faced a "$175,000 deficit." Editor John Gates peremptorily told readers to dig down and cough up: "Without that money the paper can't roll."
