POLITICAL NOTES: Pulse: 53% G.O.P.

"If the [1954] elections for Congress were being held today, which party would you like to see win in this state . . .?" To this question, Pollster George Gallup this week announced surprising nationwide results:

Republican 53%, Democratic 47%.

The finding, said Gallup, indicated a probable mid-term increase for the party in power without precedent since the Democrats gained ten seats in the 1934 congressional elections.

One big factor contributing to the Republican standing: the continued high personal popularity of Dwight Eisenhower. As of May 20, said Gallup, 74% of U.S. voters approved of the way the President was handling his job.
