BATTLE OF KOREA: Costly Week
All through the night, Chinese mortars and artillery pounded a 20-mile chain of tiny outposts. Before dawn the Chinese hit, and hit hard. Grim ROK troops fought off the Chinese at the foot of one hill, but retreated from four others. A few hours later, the ROKs gamely stormed back, recaptured two of the fallen hills.
Next night the Reds shifted their attention to half a dozen outposts not far from Panmunjom. Vegas, Carson and Elko hills fell to the Communists. U.N. losses were high, but far below the Chinese.
The week was the bloodiest and costliest in nine months; the Chinese grabbed and held half a dozen outpost positions. Though the Chinese had not even tried to make a dent in the main U.N. line, some of the outposts command higher ground, and menace the main line.
