¶ While the World Series wound up the baseball season, some players whose teams did not make the grade quietly slipped into the record book. Cleveland Pitcher Herb Score and St. Louis Outfielder Bill Virdon were named Rookies of the Year. The National League batting title went to the Phillies' Outfielder Richie Ashburn who hit .338. The American League winner: Detroit Outfielder Al Kaline, who hit .340.

¶ Still booting winners home when they pay the most, Jockey Eddie Arcaro scored a rich double at New York's Belmont Park. In the $60,580 Matron Stakes he won by a length with Claiborne Farm's favored Doubledogdare. In the $58,100 Woodward Stakes, he rode under the wire Clifford Mooers' Traffic Judge, winner by a head.

¶ Convinced that Notre Dame men would be better off concentrating on more social sports than football, Industrialist James Gerity Jr. of Adrian, Mich, gave the university $5,000 to stimulate interest in golf and bridge. "Knowing how to play golf," said Gerity, "is especially important for business people in sales and promotion. A lot of labor leaders are playing golf and bridge instead of poker and pinochle."
