Government: Lyndon's Budgeteer

(2 of 2)

A former Rhodes scholar and Williams College professor of economics, Gordon in 1961 joined the Council of Economic Advisers, moved to Budget in 1962. He is attuned to Johnson's penchant for quick answers to questions, keeps on his desk a sheet of paper with the latest federal employment figures. From the time he arrives at work in his battered Renault till he leaves for home in suburban Maryland, Gordon is a prodigious worker; the 80-hour, seven-day week he put in last week is not unusual. Gordon likes to joke that Johnson has stopped calling him at midnight or at 6 in the morning, now "confines his calls to office hours—from 8 to 8."
