U2: Band on The Run

(9 of 9)

It may have already been done. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, the second cut on The Joshua Tree, has one of those seemingly casual melodies that, a little like a high-flying version of the Police's Every Breath You Take, is heard once and slips directly into the collective memory. It manages to work much of what the band believes in, yearns for and has gone through, in the past and in prospect, into a single simple, elegant reflection:

I believe in the Kingdom Come

Then all the colors will bleed into one

But yes I'm still running

You broke the bonds

You loosed the chains

You carried the cross

And my shame . . .

You know I believe it

But I still haven't found

What I'm looking for . . .*

Let them run on, then. They are not likely to get caught. And they already know the way home.
