Hunt Down

Elected in 1986 as Alabama's first Republican Governor since Reconstruction, Guy Hunt stirred the party's hopes of expanding the G.O.P. base in Dixie. Those dreams dimmed last week when Hunt was charged with stealing $200,000 from his inaugural fund and other crimes. Hunt insisted that the indictment was "baseless." Since last September, a grand jury has been investigating the Governor's financial dealings, including allegations that Hunt, a Baptist preacher, used state planes to fly to religious engagements. No charges have been filed in that matter.
