Tale of The Tape
THE TV CREW FROM IT HAPPENED LIKE THIS, A PROgram on the Telemundo Spanish- language network, was after a human-interest story. They got a horror show instead. In North Lauderdale, Florida, Emilio Nunez confronted his ex-wife Maritza at their daughter's gravesite, blaming her for the girl's suicide. As ! the camera rolled, Nunez pulled a pistol from his pocket and shot Maritza 12 times.
After Telemundo aired the tape, news organizations rushed for copies. Though most networks decided not to show the shooting, it ran on NBC Nightly News. NBC said it wanted to "illustrate the horror of domestic violence," but hundreds of callers to the network denounced it as shocking, offensive and without news value.
