Even though he will be 80, Helms is almost certain to be re-elected if he does run. Southerners tend to keep Senators in office forever. Even George W. Bush can't count on a free pass from Senator No if he wins the White House. Helms held up more nominees in the Reagan and Bush administrations than he has under Clinton.
