DIED. FRANK PATTERSON, 58, Irish tenor who recorded 36 albums in six languages, in styles ranging from opera to folk ballad; of cancer; in New York City.
DIED. MICHAELA ODONE, 61, activist who developed a treatment for her son Lorenzo's degenerative brain disease and was portrayed by Susan Sarandon in the film Lorenzo's Oil; of lung cancer; in Fairfax, Va.
DIED. ROBERT J. LURTSEMA, 68, host of classical-music radio show Morning pro musica, known for his sonorous voice and his practice of playing a recording of a birdsong at the opening of his show; of lung disease.
KNIGHTED. MICHAEL CAINE, 67, two-time Oscar winner (Hannah and Her Sisters, The Cider House Rules), after recently complaining he felt frozen out of his country and his profession; in London.
DIED. ROBERT TRENT JONES SR., 93, golf architect who designed or remodeled more than 450 courses, many renowned for their natural obstacles, which he believed kept golf a challenging game; in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
DIED. EMPRESS DOWAGER NAGAKO, 97, widow of Japanese Emperor Hirohito and mother of reigning Emperor Akihito; at Tokyo's royal palace. She married Hirohito in 1924 and became Empress in 1926. Born a princess, Nagako reportedly had cool relations with daughter-in-law Michiko, the current Empress and the first commoner to marry a Japanese Crown Prince.
