NY RANGERS BREAK 54-YEAR SPELL
Before a nail-biting crowd at Madison Square Garden, the Stanley Cup trophy was captured by the New York Rangers, in a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. The final series came down to tonight's all-or-nothing match-up, only the second time in 23 years that the championship was decided in a seventh game. It's been a long anticipated prize for the Rangers, who've been denied an NHL championship since 1940 -- a drought that made the Ranger hex infamous. After losing the last two games, and giving up their 3-1 game edge, many feared that the New York team was forever cursed. American clubs have bested Canadians in only 12 out of the 45 championships.
