SIMPSON DEFENSE SEEKS PROSECUTOR'S EVIDENCE

O.J. Simpson was back in court today, as his lawyers petitioned for all the evidence the prosecution has gathered thus far in the murders of the football star's ex-wife and her friend. The hearing was an attempt to help Simpson's attorneys prepare for his defense, as well as to end speculation about some of the purported evidence. The prosecutor, for instance, cleared up one particularly gripping misconception: there is no bloody ski mask that might link Simpson to the crime, as was widely reported. Such errors are not surprising, given the swarm of media that has descended on L.A. Just how closely is this ordeal being covered? In a private, quiet conversation with deputies, Simpson complained about his jail-cell conditions and asked not to be returned. "I'll do anything to stay out of that cell," he said. The tete-a-tete was picked up by a lurking microphone and beamed worldwide. Prefer your scandal in paperback? Three volumes are in the works.
