MANY RAPES INVOLVE THE YOUNG, FAMILIES

One of every six rapes in the United States has involved a girl under 12 -- and the crime is nearly always committed by a family member, the Department of Justice said in a new study. Other unsettling findings from the Bureau of Justice Statistics: girls under 18 are victims of more than half the rapes reported to police even though they constitute just a quarter of the female population. The younger the victim, the more likely that the attacker is a relative or acquaintance. The study used police reports from 11 states and the District of Columbia.
