Judge Gives Kaczynski Plenty of Time to Write

Theodore Kaczynski got a bitter farewell from his victims Monday as a federal judge handed the admitted Unabomber four consecutive life sentences for the 18-year bombing campaign that killed three and maimed two scientists.

But Kaczynski the social pulpiteer was still defending himself and his sanity before U.S. District Judge Garland Burrell Jr. -- even after abandoning the bulk of those claims when he bargained for his life with prosecutors. "By discrediting me personally, they hope to discredit my political ideas," he said of the government lawyers, asking the public "to reserve their judgment about me and the Unabom case until I have a chance to respond."

The 55-year-old Kaczynski will have plenty of time for that. But his brother David sounded as if today would be his last words on the Unabomber's terrible run. "To all of these people, the Kaczynski family offers its sincerest apologies," he said outside court. "We are very, very sorry."
