CANING BOY COMES HOME

Michael Fay, the American teenager who was caned in Singapore for vandalism, arrived safely and seemingly soundly back in the States today. After spending the last 83 days in a Singapore jail, Fay left the country less than 24 hours after his release, reaching his father's home in Ohio this evening. Fay's case came to public attention when his family appealed for support in a campaign to stop the flogging. Instead, many in the U.S. called for a similar punishment against vandals in this country. Fay's mother and stepfather will hold a press conference tomorrow.
