BARRY'S BACK
Former Washington mayor Marion Barry is gaining steam in his bid for a comeback, despite his 1990 conviction for cocaine possession. A Washington Post poll shows Barry, now a city councilman, leading the D.C. mayor's race with 38 percent, 12 points ahead of challenger John Ray and 22 points above Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly. While many black voters think Barry's trial made him a martyr to white racism, TIME senior correspondent Jack E. White says Kelly's recent municipal floundering has brought nostalgia for the '80s mayor: "The main thing is, he's remembered as a guy whom the city functioned better under for poor people. They want to go back to the good old days."
