ROSTY'S LAWYERS TRY A LOOPHOLE

Illinois Rep. Dan Rostenkowski's attorneys said they'll challenge the government's indictment, on the grounds that it violates the "free speech and debate clause" that other lawmakers have invoked to defend their official actions. The clause is intended in part to protect elected officials from legal attacks on their political stands. Of course, Rosty is accused of a rather nonideological violation: converting $640,000 in federal money to personal and family use.parparparpar
