IT'S CHAVIS VS. N.A.A.C.P.

Benjamin Chavis, executive director of the N.A.A.C.P. until last Saturday, has sued the organization to get his job back. A judge will rule on the motion tomorrow. TIME correspondent Sylvester Monroe, who was present at the N.A.A.C.P. meeting where Chavis was fired, says it's possible that the Saturday voice vote violated the organization's constitution. However, there's no shortage of bad feelings toward Chavis. It was clear that most members voted against him. "I'm amazed that in the face of such overwhelming sentiment against him, he's calling attention to himself," says Monroe.
