Douglas Wilder, ex-Governor of Virginia and onetime presidential wannabe, deep-sixed his campaign because of a lack of popular support. His departure whittles the field to incumbent Democrat Charles Robb, with a womanizer's rep, and the gap-toothed, former White House Svengali Oliver North, a Reaganesque Republican, of course. Wilder's exit is likely to help Robb, who now has a chance at courting the full progressive vote in Virginia.
