A BIT OF BRITISH GLASNOST
Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams just got his voice back . . . on the British airwaves. Prime Minister John Major lifted the seven-year ban on Irish Republican Army members and those affiliated with the IRA, as another move toward a tenuous peace. The prohibition hadn't quite worked anyway: Broadcasters have long used actors to dub the comments of IRA activists. Major also ordered the reopening of 10 secondary roads in Northern Ireland. But in a bow to angry Protestants, Major promised a referendum within Northern Ireland on the province's future.
