DISTANT COUSINS
A new fossil discovery offers more evidence that humans descended from apelike creatures. The remains, found in Ethiopia, belong to a species that dates to 4.4 million years ago. Anthropologists have been on the lookout for such a sample for two decades, ever since Don Johanson uncovered a humanlike creature that became known as Lucy; those remains were found just 50 miles from the current fossil site. Scientists had been predicting that as earlier fossils were unearthed, they would be more apelike than Lucy. That's exactly what happened with the current discovery.
