Even with many financial institutions closed for Columbus Day,stocks rose vigorously on Monday in light trading. Analysts attributed the rise,on the first day following a down week, to investor optimism aboutthird-quarter corporate earnings, which will soon be announced. The Dow JonesIndustrial Average gained 23.89 points to 3821.32. The S&P 500 rose nearly fourpoints to 459.04. NASDAQ stocks rose 6.85 to 756.81. Cash bond markets wereclosed in honor of the holiday, so the yield on the benchmark 30-year Treasuryremained at 7.95%. The price of gold fell 20 cents to $390.70 in New Yorktrading.
