HAITI . . . ARISTIDE'S COMPROMISE P.M.
Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide has selected a moderate Prime Minister, government officials said today. The move is designed as a gesture to calm a minority of wealthy and middle-class Haitians who feared his populist "Lavalas" movement would prove threatening. Just days after moderates complained about his first choice -- leftist interim Foreign Minister Claudette Werleigh -- Aristide turned to Smarck Michel, 57, an upper-class ex-Commerce Minister. Before his 1991 overthrow, Aristide caught flak from business leaders for sticking with inexperienced associates.
