Software Group Backs Microsoft Breakup

The software industry's biggest trade group has endorsed the breakup of Microsoft if the software giant loses its antitrust case. The 40-page report sent to government lawyers comes despite Microsoft's active membership in the Software and Information Industry Association (formerly -- and better known as -- Software Publishers Association).

The group's recommendations are consistent with "competition principles" articulated in a recent resolution that reads like a driving map for the antitrust charges against Microsoft, singling out practices like "vaporware" and "discriminatory licensing" that work against software "innovation."
