CAMPAIGNS . . . IN LA-LA, MADONNA GOV RACE FLAP

California Republican Gov. Pete Wilson thought he'd zing Democratic opponent Kathleen Brown and instead brought pop provocateuse Madonna into the race. "When we were campaigning for Proposition 172," the governor told a crowd Tuesday, referring to a popular beef-up-the-police proposal, "Kathleen Brown was harder to find than a nun at a Madonna concert." Brown, the state treasurer, was outraged. "As a woman and a Catholic, I'm deeply offended by Pete Wilson's latest smear. I ask him to retract his statement and to apologize to California women and Catholics." The response from a Wilson spokesman: "No offense was intended to either Madonna or nuns." No word yet from Madonna.
