CALIFORNIA . . . SPENDING OVER THE TOP
The California Senate race is officially the most expensive in history. GOP Senate candidateMichael Huffingtondisclosed he's spent $25.2 million in his effort to oust Democratic incumbent Dianne Feinstein -- more than98 percent of it his own. With Feinstein's $10.7 million thrown in, the tab for the contest eclipses that of Sen. Jesse Helms' (R-NC) 1990 campaign against Harvey Gantt ($25.6 million). A Los Angeles Times poll has Feinstein ahead, 48-45 percent.
