SCHOOL PRAYER . . . AMENDMENT UNACCEPTABLE

In the latest verse of the Clinton Administration's shiftingschool prayer stance, Vice President Al Gore today came out against it. "I oppose any proposal and the President opposes any proposal to have government employees taking over the responsibility of teaching our children how to worship God, or what tradition in which to worship God or how to pray," Gore told the General Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federations. "That is the job that must be handled by families, parents, churches, synagogues" and other religious organizations, Gore said as the audience applauded. Gore's statements fly in the face of Clinton's earlier remarks Tuesday in which he said he'd discuss a constitutional amendment allowing voluntary school prayer. As Arkansas Governor, Clinton had supported a measure that permitted school prayer -- later overturned by the state's Supreme Court.Post your opinion on theWashingtonbulletin board.
