WHITE HOUSE SHOOTING . . . HOMELESS MAN DIES

Marcelino Corniel, the homeless man whom a U.S. Park Police officer shot Monday outside the White House, died Wednesday night from the wounds. White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers said the Administration was saddened by the death and that the incident "underscores the difficult jobs law enforcement officers face every day and the difficult decisions they must make." Meanwhile, Corniel's family has hired attorney Milton Grimes, who at one time represented police beating victim Rodney King, to probe the incident. Today, Grimes accused the officers of using excessive force: "It appears to me that he was not physically able to pose a threat to a kindergartner, much less a police officer." The government says Corniel was shot for refusing to drop the knife and lie on the ground.
