BISHOP COMMITS SUICIDE

The bishop of the nation's largest Episcopal diocese apparently shot himself to death on Saturday in his home in a Boston suburb, leaving his family, friends and members of the Church without an explanation for the act. A spokesman for the Church announced today that Bishop David Johnson, 61, who led a Massachusetts diocese of some 95,000 congregants, died of a single rifle shot in his Framingham, Mass., home, two months after announcing his retirement. Bishop Johnson had established DoveMass, a program to recruit volunteers to work in public schools, and had planned to help other dioceses set up similar programs.
